Again our Krewe's Captain has conjured up an exciting theme for our Bal Masqué! He said the possibilities seemed endless. He explored the ancient worlds of Sumeria, Babylon and Egypt. All seem tantalizing and exotic choices, but the Greco-Roman world won out in the end. Familiar tales of the epic battles of Olympians and Titans, of gods and mortals, yielded a treasue trove of materials for the Tableau. He drew on the annals of this rich mythology for the chosen theme, just as many Krewes of New Orleans have done when choosing names for their Mardi Gras organizations. The Krewe of Sparta's membership consists mainly of people in the shipping industry, mostly Greek-Americans who named their Krewe after the ancient city-state of Sparta. The Krewe of Orpheus, one of the newer super-Krewes, was named for the god of Music, and most of its members have ties to New Orleans' rich musical heritage, the most notable being Krewe founder.
