![]() Would the caterer show up? Where's the photographer? Would the decorations impress our guests? Would people like our Tableau? "Will we all remember our stage directions?"
Finally the moment came; it was now or neber. Our merry Masked Acadien Revelers opened the Tableau as the rest of us collectively held our breath. The roar of the crowd was deafening!! Our guests were on their feet clapping, whistling and cheering like we had never dared dream possible. None of us will ever forget that joyous "first night" feeling! This feeling still imbues our every effort...every year...and the 1999 Bal Masqué is no exception. This Tableau was drawn from the pages of southern history. In it we pay respects to six Indian tribes that left a mark on our culture, as evidenced by the South's unusually high number of Indian place names: names that trick the tongue like Chickasawhatchie, Nachitoches, Chickamauga and Okeechobee. Places like Atchafalaya, Pascagoula, Santeetlah and Daufuskie...the list seems endless. History tells us of the individual lives and deeds of Pocahontas, Sequoyah, and Powhatan, to name just three of the pantheon of native American heroes.
Imagine the sights which greeted the first European explorers and settlers as they first encountered Native American peoples and their cultures. Though the ancient tribal cultures, codes of laws and societal peculiarities would soon be destined to be lost in history, only the Acadiens can give you a glimmer of the way it once was.
