It seemed fitting that since we instituted authenticity into Atlanta's Mardi Gras celebrations, we must also share the folklore behind what we do, which inevitably leads us to the theme for this year's Bal Masqué.
This Tableau gives you a glimpse of 175 years of Mardi Gras Krewes in the Crescent City. The Vieux Carré ("the old quarter") is the historic name for the French Quarter. Although the big parades cannot pass through its narrow streets, they travel its western edge along Canal Street on their way to the Garden District. Even though Mobile is Mardi Gras' American birthplace, New Orleans' public Carnival traditions are the most widely recognized. The Acadien ball represents the private Mardi Gras which few people actually see, except as invited guests.
