The theme of our second annual Bal Masqué was based on a carnival ball that actually took place in Russia in 1902, at St. Petersburg's famed Winter Palace. Czar Nicholas and Empress Alexandra set the dress code for the event: Medieval Russian Court costumes would be worn!

Everyone excitedly researched his tunic and her gown designs; elaborate headpieces were encrusted with jewels and untold thousands of rubles were spent. That night a few photographs were taken which, decades later, were included in a book about the reign of Nicholas II. It from this book that our Krewe's Captain drew his inspiration for this year's Ball.

Now there would be the ride in a troika, powerful horses dashing through the winter snows to the splendid Winter Palace on the Neva River. Drawing near, the lights of a hundred chandeliers blaze through hundreds of windows and the sounds of a Tchaikovsky waltz float softly through the door. Quickly, we would slip inside to take our place before the Emperor and Empress arrive.

Yes! It's carnival time in old Russia!
